# Quickstart

> Install Nu and start chatting

Nu needs Docker with Compose and Node.js 24 or later. Run the installer as your
regular user:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"min-light","dark":"material-theme-ocean"}}
curl -fsSL https://nu.rebuno.io/install.sh | sh
```

The installer writes `~/.nu/compose.yaml`, starts the server, and installs the
`nu` terminal client from npm. Set `NU_HOME` to keep Nu's data somewhere other
than `~/.nu`.

## Sign in to a model

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"min-light","dark":"material-theme-ocean"}}
nu login              # list providers
nu login <provider>
```

Pick an account or an API key, then the model Nu should use. Some providers,
such as OpenAI Codex and GitHub Copilot, show a code to enter on their site.
Others, such as Anthropic and OpenRouter, open a sign-in page and the client
catches the redirect. If the client can't listen for the redirect, paste the
final URL into the terminal.

An API key in `~/.nu/.env`, such as `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY`, works without signing
in. Custom providers go in `~/.nu/models.json`, in Pi's format.

## Chat

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"min-light","dark":"material-theme-ocean"}}
nu
```

Ask it `What can you do?`. Replies and tool calls stream into the terminal, and
calls that need your approval show their choices. See [Chat](https://docs.rebuno.io/nu/chat.md).

## Update

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"min-light","dark":"material-theme-ocean"}}
nu update
```

It updates the server and the terminal client. On a machine with only the
client, it updates the client. Turns that were running when the server
restarted pick up where they stopped.

When a new version is out, the terminal client and `/status` say so.
