# Configuration

> Nu's data directory and settings

Everything Nu keeps is in `~/.nu`, or in `NU_HOME` if you set it. The container
sees it at `/home/nu/.nu`.

## Settings

| `timeZone` | The container's time zone, usually UTC. Schedules use it |
| `defaultThinkingLevel` | `medium`. Also `off`, `minimal`, `low`, `high`, `xhigh`, or `max` |
| `heartbeat` | `*/30 * * * *`. Any cron expression, or `off` |
| `compactionModel` | Nu's model. A `provider/model` for summarizing long conversations |
| `updateCheck` | `on`. Nu checks GitHub for a new release once a day. `off` stops it |

Packages have their own settings, set with `nu config set <namespace> <key> <value>`.

## Models

`nu login` signs in to a provider, and `/model` in chat picks the model. Both
save it as `defaultProvider` and `defaultModel`. Sign-ins are kept in
`~/.nu/secrets/auth.json`, in Pi's format. An API key in
`~/.nu/.env`, such as `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY`, works without signing in.

## Terminal client

The client connects to `http://127.0.0.1:4122` with the token Nu generated in
`~/.nu/secrets/terminal_token`. `nu connect` points it at Nu on another machine
and saves the address and token in `~/.nu/client.json`. See
[Remote access](https://docs.rebuno.io/nu/deployment.md#remote-access). `NU_GATEWAY_URL` overrides the
address.
