# Chat

> Talk to Nu and decide its approvals

`nu` opens the main conversation in the terminal. It is the same conversation
as your direct messages in a [chat app](https://docs.rebuno.io/nu/channels.md), and Nu replies wherever
the message came from. The client shows the last 20 turns when it starts.

Ctrl+C or Ctrl+D closes the client without stopping the turn. Run `nu` again to
see where it got to.

| Key | Action |
| - | - |
| Escape | Stop the running turn |
| Ctrl+O | Expand tool output |
| `/` | Show commands |

## Approvals

When a tool call isn't covered by your [policy](https://docs.rebuno.io/nu/policy.md), its card asks what
to do:

| Choice | Effect |
| - | - |
| Allow once | Run this call |
| Always allow | Add a rule that allows the tool from now on |
| Write a rule | Describe a rule in your own words, such as "allow git commands" |
| Deny | Refuse the call and tell Nu |

Write a rule starts a separate conversation where Nu drafts the policy change
and asks you to approve it. Once the new rule is in place, it decides the
waiting call.

Changes to the policy, new specialists, and browser handoffs only offer Allow
once and Deny. If you send a message while a call is waiting, Nu treats it as a
denial and reads your message instead.

## Commands

| Command | Action |
| - | - |
| `/new` | Start a new conversation |
| `/stop` | Stop the running turn |
| `/status` | Show running turns and pending approvals |
| `/model [provider/model]` | Show or change the model |
| `/policy [request]` | Show the rules, or ask Nu to change them |
| `/specialist [name]` | List specialists, or switch this conversation to one |
| `/tools` | List package tools |
| `/mcp` | Show each MCP server's tools |
| `/secret NAME value` | Save a secret |
| `/config namespace key value` | Configure a package |
| `/reload` | Restart Nu's services |

Packages can add commands of their own, which work in every channel.

## Browser handoff

Some pages need a person, for a login, a CAPTCHA, or a verification code. Nu
asks for a handoff, and the approval card links to a live view of the page.
Click and type there, then approve the card to hand control back.

The link uses `http://127.0.0.1:4122`. To open it from your phone, set an
address the phone can reach:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"min-light","dark":"material-theme-ocean"}}
nu set liveUrl http://nu.example.com:4122
```

## Schedules

Ask Nu for a schedule in plain words, such as "every weekday at 8, summarize my
inbox". Schedules use the time zone from `nu set timeZone`.

Every 30 minutes a heartbeat turn checks for anything that needs you, like a
reminder that is due or a schedule that failed. `nu set heartbeat` takes a
different cron expression, or `off`.
