# Channels

> Talk to Nu from chat apps

A channel connects Nu to a chat app. Channels come as
[packages](https://docs.rebuno.io/nu/tools.md#packages), and each one lists the settings and secrets it
needs:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"min-light","dark":"material-theme-ocean"}}
nu install npm:<channel-package>
nu config set <namespace> <key> <value>
printf %s '<value>' | nu secret set <NAME>
```

Nu restarts its services and connects. Direct messages go to the main
conversation, the same one you see in the terminal. Each channel or thread in
the app is a conversation of its own. Only you can talk to Nu or answer its
approvals.

Files you attach are saved under `~/.nu/workspace/attachments/` for Nu to read.
Nu can send files back on channels that support them.

## Messages from Nu

Nu can message you outside a reply, such as when a schedule finishes. It can
also post to another conversation by its key, `<channel>:<id>`. Messages to you
are allowed by default, and messages anywhere else ask first.

## Writing a channel

A channel is an [extension](https://docs.rebuno.io/nu/extensions.md) that registers a `ChannelAdapter`.
